STI-Bay
Sexually transmitted infections in outpatient care in Bavaria – A qualitative interview study with patients and general practitioners on sexually transmitted infections
Background
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) affect many people. In Germany, the social significance of STIs is evident, for example, in the rise in syphilis infections, which reached a new high in 2024. Diseases such as chlamydia have also become increasingly common in recent years and are currently considered the most common sexually transmitted infection in Germany.
In addition to typical symptoms such as changes in discharge, swelling and pain, some STIs remain asymptomatic. As a result, the pathogens can often be passed on unnoticed. Long-term consequences such as infertility and a weakened immune system are possible.
In light of this, the Institute of General Medicine at Würzburg University Hospital aims to address existing gaps in research and, as part of the “STI-Bay” project, is investigating experiences and outcomes in the treatment of STIs in Bavaria.
We are looking for you!
We are seeking participants from two groups to take part in our confidential interviews, which will last approximately 60 minutes:
- Patients: You must be at least 18 years old and have been diagnosed with an STI at a medical practice in Bavaria within the last 5 years. We are explicitly seeking people of all ages, genders and sexual orientations.
- General practitioners: You practise in Bavaria (as a specialist or trainee) and treat patients (with suspected) STIs.
Participation is voluntary and subject to strict data protection measures. Interviews are usually conducted in person, but in exceptional cases may also take place by telephone or video conference. An expense allowance will be provided following the interviews. A second interview is not planned.
